There is a saying about boats, the two happiest days are when you buy one, and when you sell one. Well in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s that was true, your boat made you money, was a source of pride, and when you sold it, you could get at least as much as you paid for it, often times more.

Well we all know those days have passed, and selling a boat now is really a tough thing to do, in a way we are being forced to sell who we are, and loosing our identity, and seeing the end of generations of family pride and source of income being deep sixed. Selling a boat today because of things beyond our control (fuel prices, imports, government regulations, closing of the waterfront, saving turtles, closing bottom, quota’s, seasons, insurance issues), bluntly, just sucks! Mainly because it has driven down the value of your retirement plan, your boat.

Selling your boat under these conditions is not a happy thing, yes you will be relieved to be free from fear of not being able to pay your fuel bill, or your boat payment, but I think it is a damn traumatic thing to have to sell your “way of life”, and up until the past seven years, you are selling your retirement investment at a big loss. You should be able to get a damn big tax write off from the IRS in my opinion. Because of this, and because I happen to be a third generation fisherman, I believe you should keep every damn cent you can from the sale of your boat. That is the purpose of NBB.

Today’s buyers are smart and connected….to the internet. You do not need a broker, who you are going to pay any commission too, or worse let them sell for 25% more than you are asking, and they keep the difference. NBB does not think that is right in these tough times, we just think there are enough ships, supply, tugs, barges, transport vessels, and yachts around they can make a fine living off them.
